A group of people, mostly the children of wealthy landowners and poor students, got together to protect Kurdish culture and prevent it from being assimilated. They were part of the leftist movement in universities in the 90s and are still working to protect Kurdish culture today. Unfortunately, there is a sad side to this story, but it is not something we want to talk about right now.
It is impressive that the Kurdish movement and the Kemalists (followers of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk) had disagreements and even fought each other over time. It is also admirable that the current leader of the Kurdish movement visited the tomb of the previous leader.
In the movie "Herd", Yilmaz Guney salutes a formation. In one scene of the movie, in a station building, there is a sign that says "Down with the Lords" with "Lime and DDKD" written underneath it.
In the 1980s, we used to talk to people from Diyarbakir who were against both Kurdish nationalism and other forms of nationalism. These people were part of a revolutionary cultural movement in the East.
The Revolutionary Democratic Cultural Association (DDKD) was shut down after a military coup in September 12. They changed the word "culture" to "Kurd" in their name. After 32 years, they hung up a sign in Diyarbakir and rejected the idea of using violence to solve their problems.
